Bay City Kitchen: A Gastronomic Haven in Bay City, OR

Have you ever craved the excitement of dining out, indulging in dishes that transcend the boundaries of your home kitchen? That's precisely the allure of Bay City Kitchen, nestled in the heart of Bay City, Oregon. Recently, I had the pleasure of experiencing its culinary delights, spurred by enticing reviews and a revamped menu.

Stepping into Bay City Kitchen, my senses were immediately captivated by the aroma of freshly prepared dishes and the welcoming ambiance. Accompanied by a dear friend, we embarked on a culinary adventure that left an indelible impression.

Our lunch selections were nothing short of spectacular. I opted for the tantalizing crab fried rice, accompanied by a velvety vanilla latte, while my companion savored the geoduck clam chowder, enriched with housemade bacon. Despite the gastronomic indulgence, our bill totaled a mere $25 for both meals, a testament to Bay City Kitchen's commitment to affordability without compromising quality.

While we resisted the temptation of the soup of the day - purple broccoli cheddar soup - our curiosity was piqued by Bay City Kitchen's array of freshly baked goods, ideal for immediate gratification or takeaway. The refrigerator/freezer section beckoned, offering a tempting selection of soups, including the herbed butternut squash variety, which I later customized with chicken and hearty noodles for an exquisite home-cooked meal.

Bay City Kitchen's dedication to locally sourced ingredients shines through its diverse beverage selection, featuring Scott Smith Tea, Sattwa Chai, Degarde beer, and Finn River Pear Cider. Under the culinary expertise of Chef Derek and pastry virtuoso Chef Kathy, Bay City Kitchen proudly caters to diverse dietary preferences, with an abundance of vegan and gluten-free options.

For those seeking an extraordinary dining experience, I wholeheartedly recommend Bay City Kitchen's Sunday suppers. Picture this: succulent Dungeness crab, steamed and roasted to perfection, complemented by roasted garlic, preserved lemon, crab compound butter, and bucatini pasta, accompanied by a vibrant salad of mixed local radishes, shaved fennel, citrus, dulse, and toasted seeds and nuts. To conclude, a citrus tart awaits, a harmonious blend of Meyer lemon curd, white chocolate, and candied kumquats - all for $35 per plate, served from 5-8pm.

Navigating Bay City Kitchen is a breeze; peruse the menu near the register, place your order, and await delivery at your table. The tranquil ambiance, coupled with panoramic views of the mountains, Bay City village, and the bay, sets the stage for an unforgettable dining experience.

Whether you're planning a romantic date night, a casual lunch with friends, or simply seeking culinary enlightenment, Bay City Kitchen beckons with open arms.

Operating hours are Thursday to Monday, 11:00 am to 7:00 pm, with Sunday dinner service from 5:00 pm to 8:00 pm. Visit Bay City Kitchen at 5535 Hayes Oyster Dr., Bay City, OR, or explore their offerings online at baycitykitchen.com. Connect with them on Facebook at https://m.facebook.com/baycitykitchen for the latest updates and specials.

Bird Rescue Resources

We live in arguably one of the prettiest parts of the PNW. With acres of forest land, miles of beaches and incredible views from towering dunes, the natural beauty of the Oregon Coast is captivating. Equally so, the marine and land flora and fauna that surround us continue to excite each adventure, between the migrating birds, large herds of elk, blooming trillium and abundance of wild berries, there is so much to appreciate. While we want to continue to admire our natural environment and all living things to thrive without disturbance, being able to help rescue and rehabilitate injured wildlife has been something I have really enjoyed doing

My first injured wildlife encounter occurred on my way back from Pacific City where I drove past a small fluffy object in the road. At first, I thought it could have been a leaf, but once I passed it, I couldn’t help but turn around and check. To my surprise it was a little House Finch that was stunned from most likely hitting a car. I was able to bring it home and keep it safe for a few hours until it recovered and flew away Little did I know at the time that there was a place I could call to bring the finch

About a year later, my boyfriend gave me a call after a walk out in Oceanside. He had stumbled upon an injured Pelican that was unable to fly and called it into the Wildlife Center of the North Coast in Astoria. While the wildlife center in Astoria normally transports animals, they are short staffed, and did not have an available driver at the time to come down and pick up the Pelican (who we later named Gilligan).

He had already been reported a few times by locals who had seen him but no one had been able to make the commute to drop him off at the wildlife refuge. Since my boyfriend had the day off, he figured “why not?” and gave me a call. My bosses were really encouraging and let me take the rest of the afternoon off to join the adventure up to Astoria The avian flu has been going around, so before you start the rescue process yourself, make sure to call the wildlife refuge and confirm that they are open and can accept the type of wildlife that you find. If they are able to accept, make sure you bring the proper equipment to transport the animal safely. For us, we only had a spare tote and a blanket which seemed to do the trick

If you encounter an injured animal, here is a quick reference guide on who to call:

There are so many ways you can get involved with the wildlife center Whether you can sign up and volunteer a few hours, be on their “on call” list for transporting injured animals, or donating through their website portal.

Steens Mountain

Steens Mountain is located in the remote Southeastern corner of Oregon—about as far as you could get from the Tillamook area without leaving Oregon It is less than 50 miles from the Nevada border stretching across more than 30 miles. Most unique is the fact that the wilderness area covers 170,200 Acres The terrain is very rugged and known for its jagged peaks and deep gorges, which is the perfect set up for breathtaking views

The Steens abruptly rise up from the sagebrush desert to nearly 10,000 feet. This geological monument also forms one of the largest fault-block mountain ranges in the Great Basin.

What makes this area truly amazing is the diverse ecosystem, from lush alpine meadows with bright colorful wildflowers to hidden glacial lakes nestled high among the peaks

The unique blend of scenery creates a haven for a wide range of wildlife including, various bird species, golden eagles, owls, wild horses, rattlesnakes, mule deer, pronghorn antelope, bighorn sheep, and one single rocky mountain goat You heard me right, there is only ONE rocky mountain goat currently living in the Steens Mountains according to ODFW in Burns, Oregon, and we were lucky enough to see him just 50 yards off the jagged cliff in September (picture attached)

One mile below the East Base of Steens Mountain is the Alvord Desert and along its edge you will find Alvord Hot Springs After a long day of fishing, hiking or hunting, you will want to make sure to check this place out and relax in the twin concrete pools that date back to the 1940’s The water coming out of the ground is 170 degrees, but cools when it mixes with the water above ground in the soaking pools.

The best way to enjoy this unique scenery is by car along a scenic driving route that offers breathtaking views of the surrounding area, including the Alvord Desert The loop is 59 miles long, takes about 4 hours to travel and includes the highest road in Oregon You will literally be on top of Oregon

Exciting Community News: Tillamook Lanes Acquired by YMCA

In a wonderful turn of events, our local YMCA has made a game-changing acquisition by taking over Tillamook Lanes, the beloved local bowling alley This significant move not only ensures the preservation of a cherished community landmark but also paves the way for exciting new opportunities, particularly for youth programs.

From bowling leagues to leadership development initiatives, the YMCA, under the enthusiastic leadership of Kaylan Sisco, CEO & Executive Director at Tillamook County Family YMCA, is committed to offering even more avenues for our young members to thrive and enjoy their time.

Several months ago, I embarked on a journey with the YMCA, which has quickly become one of my most fulfilling experiences in recent years. It's the part of my job where I get to assist a client in reaching their goals and making a positive impact on the community where I live and raise my own children. Kaylan and the YMCA board had a vision not only to expand the physical space of the YMCA but also to introduce new and exciting programs for our youth. All of this, while preserving a space that holds a special place in the hearts of many locals, serving not only as a bowling alley but also as a gathering spot for socializing, celebrating, dining, and spending quality time with family and friends.

Thanks to years of diligent fiscal management, the YMCA endowment fund, and the generous contributions from the Pastega Family, The Loren Park Foundation, and the Robert Riggert Family Foundation, the YMCA successfully closed the deal on the bowling alley just last month. They now hold the keys to starting the process of running the alley while the community continues to enjoy it. Additionally, they are exploring new after-school programs designed to provide a safe, welcoming place for kids from neighboring Jr. High, East Elementary, and all other local schools. Here, they can bowl, enjoy a meal, and simply have a secure space to spend their time, much like the primary Y location on Stilwell in town.

We encourage you to drop by this long standing community hub and extend a warm welcome to both the familiar faces on the existing staff and the new additions. Stay tuned for updates on this thrilling new adventure for our local YMCA

Bargain shopping in Tillamook

Tillamook offers several fantastic options for finding great bargains while supporting eco-friendly practices. Among the places I’ve had the most success are the Goodwill, Habitat for Humanity, Recurrent, and Likely Finds.

Goodwill isn’t just your go-to for the usual suspects like clothes, and housewares; it’s a treasure trove for various other items too. You’ll find everything from charger cords to Halloween costumes, work attire, beachwear, and even unique gift exchange items. Meanwhile, Recurrent specializes in selling clothes, handbags, and jewelry.

Habitat for Humanity stands out for its extensive selection of beautiful furniture and knick-knacks. They excel in presenting holiday items, and they even have a free shed for items that haven’t sold within a designated time frame. Additionally, they stock top-notch building supplies. My personal experience includes purchasing supplies for constructing a tree fort and a yard care shed that resembles a quaint Western outpost, complete with a covered wood porch. Remarkably, the entire project cost only $300 (labor not included, ha).

While I haven’t had the chance to explore them yet, two more intriguing options in Tillamook are the Arc and The Cash Company. The Arc’s proceeds go towards assisting individuals with intellectual and developmental disabilities., and their offerings include clothing, jewelry, and housewares.

And let’s not forget about the allure of the many garage sales happening through town. Keep an eye out for listings in the Headlight Herald and on Facebook pages like Mooksville.

Here are links to some of the websites where you can find more information on the their locations and operating hours:

Fishing on the coast with kids

First and foremost, we’re gonna start with making sure that as adults embarking on this journey, we are in the right mindset to get ready to fish with children. This task is not for the faint of heart and is not the place to put your dreams of catching the largest fish you’ve ever caught or putting dinner on the table. This is purely for the joy of children and to build a relationship with nature that will last a lifetime.

My kids have fished off and on throughout their childhood. I started to expose them to enjoying nature when they were very young. As they got older, I used to avoid taking my kids to fish the river by myself because I was terrified that I was going to catch a large salmon and not know what to do with it.

I’ve since gotten over that fear and have also realized that the erratic casting and reeling, loud noises, rocks that get thrown into the river make the likelihood of catching a large fish out of season that is beyond my skill set slim to nothing. There are times that I’m not even sure that we use the right bait.

We like to fish off of the docks or on the banks at or around the various boat launches. They usually have a nice place set up and in the shallow water you can usually see small fish swimming. This helps with the kid's attention span (and mine). Throughout Tillamook County, there are also many ponds that are stocked in the spring with trout. There also are family fishing days (https://myodfw.com/articles/take-family-fishing) that are an awesome place to start.

When we fish, we pack a couple extra poles. We bring a couple hand-me-down poles, one of which is a circa 1997 Scooby Doo push button pole that was a hand-me-down from family and another pole that was acquired from who knows where. We have some other items that have been handed down and items that have been added because now, every time we enter the store, he wants to buy fishing bait or tackle. Henry’s favorite is a tackle box from my grandpa John, loaded with all the good stuff.

We use power bait (oh my gosh it stinks) and some fancy things that I think are possible for catching ocean fish that my son insists is for river fish (remember: goal with small children is to not catch all the fish. It’s just to build a love of nature and grow the likelihood of having a wonderful hobby into adulthood.). We also stop by the sporting goods store and grab some worms before we go.

Do know that Oregon requires licensing and tags. This information can be found here: https://myodfw.com/fishing/licensing-info

This year I went on a guided trip early in the spring (more on that in another blog) so I went with the sportsman’s pack when I purchased my tags. I was feeling pretty wild, thinking that I was going to do much more hunting and such than I actually will. Although, there is still time… maybe I can catch a bear or an elk.

When I think about why this is something that’s important to me, it absolutely has to do with my personal experience growing up on the coast as a child. I spent a lot of time in nature, fishing, playing in the rivers and just exploring. Also, please put your children in life jackets, unlike mine in the pictures. When asked if it’s about catching fish, Henry says “nope, it’s about having fun”.
