If you haven't been to Cape Lookout State Park, you must put it on your list of places to visit in Tillamook County. It's fun for the whole family! There is a day use area with a gazebo perfect for family picnics, old growth forests to explore, a wonderful 3+ mile sandy beach and multiple well-groomed trails throughout the park.
There are two segments of the Cape Lookout trail; the North Trail and the South Trail which offer hiking through the forest above the ocean. The North Trail begins in the day-use area of the State Park campground and continues 2.3 miles north to the Cape Trail trailhead. The South Trail continues south of the trailhead another 1.7 miles. Or explore miles of ocean beaches along the Netarts Spit, north of the campground. On the beach at low tide, be sure to keep an eye out for sand dollars. The last time I went I found 92!
For a short, family-friendly stroll, try the park’s Nature Trail, which begins near the registration booth.
If you find that there’s simply just too much to take in on a day trip, you can stay in the campground, yurt or a cabin. There are 35 full hookup sites, 13 yurts, 6 delightful little ocean view cabins and 170 tent spaces with water and shower facilities nearby. The park sells firewood, has an RV dump station and a meeting hall as well. Be sure to book ahead of time as the park fills up quickly in the summer and Fall months.
This is a great place to spend the day so be sure to pack a lunch! There are picnic tables with primitive grill stations in the wooded area overlooking the ocean, or bring a blanket and enjoy your lunch right on the beach. The photo opportunities are excellent whether during the day or in the evening as the sun sets on another glorious day at the Oregon Coast.
